Is The PS3 Slim Worth It?

The Sony PS3 Slim is Sony’s latest version of its prized games console.

The PS3 Slim is quite similar to how it was before, but the design has undergone
a transformation.

As said before, the design on the PS3 Slim has been modified from the old
version. The Slim is 33% smaller, 36% lighter and 34% less power consuming
than the old PS3.

Sony have also changed the touch-sensitive buttons to standard push-buttons, and have removed the master power switch at the back of the unit.

One of the changes that I dislike is the remove of the PS3′s stylish gloss
that used to make the console look quite desirable. Also with the “Playstation 3″
writing changed to just an etching of the PS3, the Slim has turned quite,
well, dull.

Sony has also removed that silver trim on the Slim. Maybe the removal of all of these
small design luxuries is probably one of Sony’s efforts to make the Slim cheaper to
make and sell, after the losses that they made with the sales of the previous PS3,
after a long, costly lawsuit with Dualshock.

At least the two USB, HDMI, AV Multi-out, ethernet and optical out ports on the PS3
Slim are still there, as they were on the previous model. It’s a good thing that there
were no sacrifices there. The power cable has been shrunk down to being just a two-pin cable.

The Slim can still boast a BluRay drive, which will play your discs in an awesome 1080p
video quality. There is also the added feature of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD master audio
which can be bitstreamed to a receiver through HDMI.

There is a bit of a problem with the PS3 Slim’s CD and DVD playback; there is more
audio jitter when these formats are played then there was on the last version of PS3.
However, the DVD upscaling feature seems to overshadow this all, and you’ll probably
be so impressed at the video quality that you don’t even notice the little sound defects.

This all comes down to one question; should you get the PS3 Slim? Costing almost 250,
it’s quite expensive in comparison to the Wii and xBox 360. However, consider the
fact that the Slim has a BluRay function, and BluRay players often cost more than the
console itself, and the Slim is quite a bargain. If you have the funds and are looking
for a good next-gen console, the Slim is for you. If you already have the previous model
of PS3, it’s probably not worth the upgrade. And if it all seems very expensive, maybe
a cheaper console will have to do the job.
